They look like they might be schmaltzy “Self Help” books or a selection of well meant fluffy “Christian Psychobabble”….BUT, IT’S NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL!!
Ed Welch has been writing books like these for a long time. I cannot believe, that 15 years ago, I walked past a particular copy that was for sale on the same Christian bookstall for about 4 years running and never bought it!!! Once you grab a copy of one of Ed’s books and get into the first few pages, you will probably want to buy another one of his books even before you have finished the one you started reading…(or maybe that’s my problem!)
“Addictions” will confront your inner convictions and challenge the commitment to God that you say you have. This book is written with drug and alcohol addiction as a main focus, however we all have our addictions; our idols that push God off the top spot in our lives. Our drug of choice might be a biochemical buzz from certain activities legal or illegal, wise or unwise, sexual desire, food cravings, physical exercise, perhaps being a clean freak, and this book applies to ALL of them!
“When People Are Too Big” investigates the same “worship disorder” issue from a completely different angle! Who calls the shots in your life? Who do you say “how high?” to when they ask you to “jump!” and are the methods we use to build self-esteem going to be helpful in the long run? What is the “Fear of the LORD” anyway and what happens when God is too small in your life?
Ed Welch is the master of practical theology; he takes scripture to those hidden places in your thinking that you haven’t looked at properly in years, maybe never!
These books can be borrowed from Emma, or bought from you local Christian Bookshop (ask me if you can’t get hold of the title you want!)
